Leica Camera AG will begin development of a digital camera for the company's key "M" series lenses, a person close to the company said Friday.
The "M" rangefinder camera is one of Leica's flagship cameras, and its introduction in the 1950s helped make Leica a household name in both professional and amateur-enthusiast photography.
Leica has said in the past that "M" lenses weren't suited for digital sensors, as the lenses - originally designed for film - cause image distortions on the border of a digital sensor. A new type of "microlens" digital sensor will solve this problem, the person close to Leica said.
